Matema · since 1991

Threads first.
Yarns later.

Founded on 16 February 1991 by Pedro Correia, Matema began at home, with threads. Later, it expanded into cotton yarns and commercial agency. Today, from Guardizela, it works in trading, resale and commercial agency for yarns and threads for the Portuguese market.

Foundation and threads

Pedro Manuel Frazão Correia da Silva founded Matema on 16 February after working at the family company Fábrica Tirsense. He started with threads so as not to compete with the factory's yarn business, which was still operating.

The beginning

Home, farm and colours

The project began at home. On a farm in Santo Tirso, a space previously used to store hay served as the warehouse. An employee on the farm organised dispatches using a colour code for each factory or customer; no logistics issues were reported during that early low-volume phase.

After the closure

Moving into yarns

After Fábrica Tirsense closed, Matema expanded its resale activity to cotton yarns and moved to a larger warehouse in Santo Tirso.

Later

A new base

The company sold the premises in Santo Tirso and later moved to its current site in Guardizela, Guimarães, at Travessa Industrial dos Pombais.
